Knockan Hill Park

Stranton Lodge - 1944

Stranton Lodge was designed by Hubert Savage in the English Arts and Craft Style and was built in the mid-thirties for Maude and Tom Hall.

The front garden was a showplace of Victoria, with a series of cascading ponds and beds planted to relate harmoniously with the natural woodland setting.

In a letter to the Mayor and Council of Saanich dated May 10, 1974, Mrs. Hall wrote: “Now my house and land belong to Saanich and I hope that many people will enjoy the lower park and care for it lovingly.”

In May 1992 the house and gardens were designated as a heritage site. A pilot project of the Saanich Heritage Foundation includes restoration plans for both the cottage and gardens.
